NHL Over/Under Point Totals Betting 2011-12 Season

The over/under point totals for every team in the NHL are out at SportsInteraction.com, one of our top rated NHL sportsbooks for Canadians.  The oddsmakers have set a total amount of points that each team is likely to get throughout the season and you can bet on whether you believe the team will finish the 82 game NHL season with more or fewer than that number of points.  To see the totals for all 30 teams visit SportsInteraction.com and check under the NHL futures tab on the left sidebar.

The team that has the highest total is the Washington Capitals with an over/under of 107.5 points, while the Senators have the lowest total with an over/under of just 74.5.

Predictions

Toronto Maple Leafs – 89.5

The Maple Leafs have improved and I will agree that the team looks better than it has in past seasons, but 89.5 points puts them right on the bubble for playoff contention.  The Leafs haven’t been in the 90’s for points since 06-07 when they finished in 9th place in the Eastern Conference and the team just does not have the depth up front or the sure thing in net.  It is possible, but I think this total is higher than it should be due to all of the Maple Leafs fans in Canada.  The smart money is on the under here.

Play: Toronto Maple Leafs under 89.5

Vancouver Canucks – 106.5

The 106.5 may look high, but when you consider the division that the Canucks play in you will begin to realize that it should be easy for them to accumulate points this season.  The Flames, Oilers, Wild and Avalanche are all sub par teams and the Canucks will take advantage of this.  They should once again finish with close to as many points as they earned last season (117).

Play: Vancouver Canucks over 106.5

Ottawa Senators – 74.5

The Ottawa Senators are really taking a beating by experts and oddsmakers prior to this season.  They have the lowest total at Sports Interaction and are ranked 30th in ESPN’s power rankings for the season.  However the fact is the Senators won plenty of games with a worse team at the end of last season and the addition of Craig Anderson in net should win them many games that they would have lost with Elliott or Leclaire last year.  Filatov is a nice addition to the top 6 forwards and although the team isn’t deep in the forward positions, the defense such as Gonchar and Karlsson should generate scoring opportunities.

Play: Ottawa Senators over 74.5

Our sister site Sports Bet Listings has offered a prediction for every team in the entire league.  Check out their NHL total points betting predictions post for more plays.

Toronto Maple Leafs Betting – Stanley Cup Odds and Predictions

The Toronto Maple Leafs.  You hear it every year how the Leafs are going to be good and make a push for the playoffs.  Yet the reality is this rarely happens and the team has remained on the outside looking in since prior to the NHL lockout.  The last year the Leafs made the playoffs was way back in 2003-04.  Brian Burke was brought in to be the GM in November of 2008 and he told fans that he was not planning a long rebuild, but instead intended to build a winning team right away.  Three seasons have come and gone and the Maple Leafs have never looked like a serious playoff contender.  Could this be the year for the storied franchise to regain some respect?

I am not a Maple Leafs supporter so when I say this it should bring more weight.  This is the first year that all of those Maple Leafs fanatics might be right.  The Leafs could have a legitimate shot at the playoffs.  The defencemen are pretty solid, with Phaneuf and Schenn leading the way, while Liles, Franson and Aulie should step in to be contributors.  On forward Grabovski, Kulemin and MacArthur will be together again and should continue to produce, while Tim Connolly will be the first legitimate centreman that Kessel has played with.  I personally am not sold on Kessel and don’t believe he can be the key ingredient in a winning team, but this year with Connolly time will tell.  The depth on the team isn’t horrible either so thus far the Maple Leafs look to be a pretty average team.  The one missing ingredient could be in goal, where they were brutal last season until Reimer stepped up late.  Can he do it again?  It will be interesting to see the Toronto Maple Leafs betting lines throughout the season.  I think they will be an inconsistent team that can play well from time to time, so I will likely be ready to bet on the Maple Leafs when they are big dogs.  Check out the NHL picks daily to see which way I lean with regards to the Leafs throughout the season.

Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup Betting Odds – Updated September 27th, 2011

The Toronto Maple Leafs odds to win the Stanley Cup are listed at +6500 at 5Dimes.com.  This means that a $100 bet would win $6500 for a total payout of $6600, if the impossible happened and the Leafs went all the way.  The odds at 5Dimes.com are much better than our other top sportsbooks, with Bodog.eu offering +5000 and Sportsbook.com +4000.

Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup Prediction

The line is pretty long, but it can’t ever be long enough.  The Maple Leafs just don’t have the personnel to be a top contender in the league.  They may make the playoffs, but they would squeak into 8th and not have the ability to compete with the top teams in the Eastern Conference, let alone the Western Conference champion.  Save your money and bet on the Chicago Blackhawks.  If you must though, make sure you bet on the Maple Leafs at www.5Dimes.com to get the best odds.

Vancouver Canucks Betting – Stanley Cup Odds and Prediction

The Canucks are surely still hurting from their game 7 Stanley Cup heart break last year where they just didn’t have an answer for the Boston Bruins who dominated the series (even though they lost 3 games) and won game 7 in Vancouver 4-0.  The Sedin’s were unable to show up in the Finals and Luongo was outplayed in goal.  The entire team was outplayed and what resulted was a riot in downtown Vancouver.  This year the team looks pretty much the same.  One of their top d-men, Christian Ehrhoff, was wanting too much money so he signed for a really weird contract with Buffalo that is a $4 million cap hit, but $10 million up front.  The only addition they really made was Marco Sturm, who had 16 points in 35 games last year and will hopefully fit into the 2nd or 3rd line on the Canucks.

The Canucks know what it takes to win the Cup, they were there within 1 win.  In fact they had 2 games to win the Cup and they couldn’t do it either time.  Perhaps if Kesler wasn’t playing with a slight injury or the Sedin’s were able to put up half as many points as they did against the Sharks the team would be fine.  What the Canucks really need is depth scoring.  They are going to come up against teams that can shut down the Sedin’s.  Look at last playoffs.  Daniel and Henrik had 18 of their 42 points in the Sharks series in just 5 of 25 playoff games.  That’s 43% of their production in just 20% of the games.  The reason being that the Sharks didn’t really have a capable shutdown defensive pair/shutdown centre like the other 3 teams did.  That being said the Canucks should once again easily win their division and the vast majority of their regular season games.  Check our NHL picks everyday to see when there are sharp Canucks lines.

Vancouver Canucks Stanley Cup Betting Odds – Updated September 21st, 2011

The Canucks odds to win the Stanley Cup are currently listed at +725 at 5Dimes.com, making the Canucks the oddsmakers favourites once again.  Our other top rated NHL betting site Sport Interaction, is actually offering slightly better odds for the Canucks at +800.  While this is rare, you should bet on the Canucks at Sports Interaction this time.  Bodog and Sportsbook.com are each offering +700.

Vancouver Canucks Stanley Cup Prediction

I don’t give the Canucks this good a shot this season.  They just don’t have the goaltending and they were lucky to reach game 7 of the finals last season.  I wouldn’t take this bet, but if you are so obliged, visitSportsInteraction.com to find the best odds.

One bet on the Canucks that is a lock is them to win the Northwest Division at -800 at 5Dimes.com, but you have to lock up your funds for a while, without a great return.

NHL Preseason Betting Predictions September 20th

The preseason kicked off last night with 4 games (2 being a double header by the Preds and Panthers).  The Maple Leafs beat the Senators 4-2 in Toronto, but I am still sticking with my belief that the odds were right for a wager on the Senators at +145.  You will see tonight that there is no NHL betting line that is even close to +145, with +125 for the Coyotes at the Ducks being the longest line.  In the first game of the preseason it’s really anyone’s game, especially when the majority of top players on either team are not in the lineup.

Visit 5Dimes.com to find all of the odds for tonight’s NHL preseason games.

Dallas Stars @ Montreal Canadiens

Dallas Stars +125
Montreal Canadiens -145

The Habs have already set 3 different rosters for their first 3 NHL preseason games.  They have yet to release which of these 3 “teams” will start tonight, but either way spreading their team so thin shouldn’t result in them being favoured tonight.  Most NHL teams will have 2 “teams” for the first few games of preseason or maybe one and a half, with players that are actually battling for positions playing each game throughout the preseason.  Dallas on the other hand doesn’t even have enough players in camp to legitimately make 3 NHL “teams”.  They likely won’t play their top NHL guys, but the team they put on the ice tonight, should have more depth than the Habs, with the Canadiens relying on a few legitimate NHL players to carry the load.  This game could once again go either way, but the smart money is on Dallas at +125.

My Pick: Dallas Stars +125

Of the online sports betting sites that I use, 5Dimes.com is the highest rated on my list because they almost always have the best odds for NHL games.  You can also often find reduced juice on many NHL games throughout the season, and the extra money you save can really add up over the course of the season.

Ottawa Senators vs Toronto Maple Leafs Preseason Betting Prediction

The preseason is finally here!  Hockey is back!  Well almost.  Preseason isn’t exactly the regular season, but it’s a start.  And kicking things off this Monday, September 19th is the Battle of Ontario!

Ottawa Senators @ Toronto Maple Leafs

Senators +140 (5Dimes.com)
Maple Leafs -170 (5Dimes.com)

The Sens are pretty big underdogs in this game, considering it’s a preseason game and nobody even knows who is dressing yet.  Add in the fact that the Senators rookies defeated the Maple Leafs rookies in the finals of the Oshawa rookie tournament last year and you have to wonder about this betting line.  Yes, the Maple Leafs are expected to do slightly better than the Senators this season, but when I look at a preseason game I always think it could go either way.  But this one I have to give a slight edge to the Senators.  Combine the earlier mentioned fact that the Senators rookie team already beat the Maple Leafs, with the fact that the Binghamton Sens (Ottawa’s AHL affiliate) won the Calder Cup last year and you have to agree that the players that are likely to dress for the Senators in this opening preseason game have had some success in the past few months.

A general rule of thumb in preseason games is to bet on the underdogs because you really have no idea what’s going to happen out there, especially in the first few preseason outings.  Combining this rule with the slight edge I’m giving the Sens and the +140 line looks very tempting.

My Pick: Ottawa Senators +140

In unrelated news, the NFL is under way and I wanted to point any of you who enjoy NFL betting online to his NFL betting picks site.  He knows his stuff, check out the site.

Pittsburgh Penguins Betting – Stanley Cup Odds and Prediction

The Penguins are now 3 years removed from their Stanley Cup winning run that occurred back in 2009.  Last year they looked poised to have another run to the finals at the midpoint of the season with Sidney Crosby tearing up the league, but as we all know the hit at the Winter Classic, followed by a harmless looking Hedman hit a few days later put Crosby out with a concussion and he was never able to return.  On top of this the team was without their secondary superstar and 2009 Conn Smythe winner, Evgeni Malkin for the second half as well.  The Pens were still able to make the playoffs though and were actually only 1 point away from the Capitals who led the East.  In the first round they were able to outplay the Lightning, but the lack of their top players really showed up on the scoreboard as the Penguins weren’t able to turn their pressure into goals and eventually lost in 7 games.

This season, we know that Malkin is back and ready to go.  Crosby is another story.  The concussion isn’t completely healed, but he seems convinced he will play at some point this season, but we can’t be sure of when.  The main loss from last season is Maxime Talbot who was a real character guy for the team.  The Pens did bring in Steve Sullivan, but his top game days look to be behind him.  Regardless, the Penguins were a force to be reckoned with in the second half last season.  Add Crosby and Malkin and you have the makings of an amazing team.  The Penguins should continue to win early in the season even with Crosby out of the lineup and it may be possible to find some great Pittsburgh Penguins bets if the oddsmakers put too much weight on the absence of Crosby.  Either way, check out our daily NHL picks to see if there are any sharp bets for or against the Penguins this season.

Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup Betting Odds – Updated September 16th, 2011

The Penguins odds to win the Stanley Cup are currently listed at +1000 at Bodog.eu.  This is the best line that I could find online, making it one of the rare times that 5Dimes.com does not offer the best NHL betting line.  Visit Bodog.eu to place your Penguins Stanley Cup bet.  5Dimes offers a division winner bet for the Penguins of +125 if they win the Atlantic.

Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup Prediction

I do like the Penguins chances of winning the Cup this year.  The team will learn to play without Crosby early in the season and then his return should skyrocket them to one of the top few contenders.  Malkin is ready to return to the top of his game and if Malkin and Crosby are both clicking at the same time some might say the Pens are unstoppable.  I don’t expect them to win the Atlantic crown however, because I really like what the Flyers have done in the offseason and even the Devils or Rangers have a shot at the division if the pieces fall into place.

Boston Bruins Betting – Stanley Cup Odds and Predictions

2011 Stanley Cup Champions.  The Bruins pulled it off last year relying on the best goaltender in the NHL, a solid defensive corps led by Zdeno Chara and balanced scoring up front.  After the Stanley Cup the Bruins were able to keep the majority of their team together unlike the Blackhawks the year before.  The only subtractions are Tomas Kaberle, Michael Ryder and Mark Recchi.  The Bruins were able to secure Joe Corvo’s services for the upcoming year, so the Kaberle loss should be counteracted with another solid puck moving defenceman and Benoit Pouliot who has shown glimpses of his 5th overall draft potential should be able to fill Ryder’s void.  The main issue will be losing veteran Recchi, who showed he could still contribute with the 6th most points on the team in the playoffs, but this departure should open up room for Seguin and he should see much more time on the top 2 lines.

The main question isn’t if the Bruins can be good again.  Their roster is pretty much the same and they showed how effective it is in both the regular season and of course the playoffs.  The question is if there will be a Stanley Cup hangover.  I think the leadership of this team and the veteran presence will make sure the entire team is ready come the regular season.  The Blackhawks had a very young core and they had to deal with a big portion of their team changing so comparing the Bruins to their poor regular season isn’t accurate in my opinion.  I think the Bruins will be ready and they should battle once again for the Northeast Division crown and the Stanley Cup.  I’m sure there will be a lot of opportunities to bet against the Bruins this year, with the public and oddsmakers being high on them after their Stanley Cup run, but I also feel there will be occassions when a Boston Bruins bet will make sense.  Follow me on the NHL predictions blog to see where I stand on various Bruins games throughout the season.

Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Betting Odds – Updated September 15th, 2011

The Boston Bruins odds to win the Stanley Cup are listed at +1050 at 5Dimes.com, which makes them the 4th favourites according to the oddsmakers.  These are some of the best odds you will find online, which is what we have come to expect from 5Dimes.com.  Sports Interaction has them listed at +750, Sportsbook.com at +800 and Bodog at +1000.  The +1050 means that a $100 wager on the Bruins to win the Cup would win $1050 for a total payout of $1150 if the Bruins came through again.

The +1050 odds seem fairly accurate, but I would probably change a few teams that are more favoured with some teams that are less favoured.  The Bruins are also listed at +120 to win the Northeast Division this year, which they should do as long as there is no Stanley Cup hangover.

Chicago Blackhawks Betting – Stanley Cup Odds and Predictions

The Blackhawks are currently two years removed from their Stanley Cup winning season of 2009-10, which should mean they won’t have a Stanley Cup hangover like last season, but instead be hungry to repeat their success and show they weren’t a one trick pony.  Last season the Blackhawks narrowly squeaked into the 8th spot in the Western Conference, thanks to the Minnesota Wild defeating the Dallas Stars on the final day of the regular season.  Chicago then proceeded to lose 3 quick (but close) games to the Vancouver Canucks before waking up and blowing up the ‘Nucks in games 4 & 5 and getting a tight overtime win in game 6.  Game 7 once again came down to a single overtime goal, with Burrows burying a slapshot after a Campoli giveaway (Campoli is no longer with the Blackhawks).  The ‘Hawks saved face in the series winning games 4 through 6, but if they could have just got a bounce in any of the first 3 games (2 of which were 1 goal games – game one they lose 2-0), of if Sharp scores on that great chance in game 7 overtime, the entire playoff landscape would have been different.

I expect the Blackhawks to come out this season with something to prove.  The core of the team is still together from the Stanley Cup run with Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, Patrick Sharp, David Bolland, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Corey Crawford all ready to make another big run this season.  Add the veteran presence of Andrew Brunette and Rostislav Olesz, along with the young skilled play of Michael Frolik and Nick Leddy and all of a sudden you start to realize that this team is still as solid as it’s ever been.  I’m going to be placing plenty of Chicago Blackhawks bets throughout the season because I feel they are underrated by the majority of the population and I expect them to bring their A-game every night with a new found motivation (especially after seeing how close they were to not making the playoffs last season).  I suggest you bet on Chicago Blackhawks as well.  Check out the NHL predictions page daily to see when the odds are right to make the play.

Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup Betting Odds – Updated September 14th, 2011

The Blackhawks odds to win the Stanley Cup are currently listed at +1500 at 5Dimes.com.  These are the best odds of any of our recommended sportsbooks.  A detail we have come to expect from 5Dimes.com.  Sports Interaction lists them at +1000, while Sportsbook.com and Bodog each have them at +1200.  The +1500 odds means that a $100 wager on the Blackhawks would win you $1500, for a total payout of $1600 if Chicago won the cup.

Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup Prediction

As mentioned earlier I fully expect the Blackhawks to come out this season with something to prove.  They should once again be atop of the Central Division with the Red Wings getting older (another bet with ridiculous value at 5Dimes.com, with the Blackhawks at +280 to win the division).  The hunger will then continue into the playoffs, where the Blackhawks proved they still have what it takes (one goal difference and the ‘Hawks could have repeated as Cup champs last year).  I love the odds at +1500 because the Blackhawks are one of only a few teams I actually think have a shot at the Stanley Cup this season.

NHL 2011-12 Division Winner Odds and Predictions

5Dimes.com will be our top rated sportsbook for the upcoming season.  Currently they are the only one of our recommended NHL sportsbooks that offer division winner odds for the upcoming season.  They also generally offer the most player friendly odds on every NHL game throughout the season!  Visit 5Dimes.com now to check out the sportsbook and see the NHL futures odds for 2011-12.

This is my first post back after the summer and it’s a sad day in hockey with the Lokomotiv hockey team being involved in a plane crash that killed the entire team, including Pavol Demitra and Karel Rachunek, among other NHLers.  To start thinking about the game, instead of all the unfortunate deaths that have occurred this hockey offseason I checked out the odds and placed some division winners wagers.  Last year I cashed in with the Sharks at +110 and this year there are some even better lines that I will be taking advantage of and encouraging you to do the same.

Atlantic Division

Philadelphia Flyers +120
Pittsburgh Penguins +125
New Jersey Devils +900
New York Rangers +1000
New York Islanders +2500

I’m staying away from this division.  I thought about placing a wager on both the Flyers and Penguins in order to earn a little bit of money, but then I realized that the Flyers really shook up their team so how they do this year is anybody’s guess.  I think they will do well, but things may not mesh.  Crosby also might not be back for a good portion of this season, which could hurt the Pens chances.  The Devils and Rangers each have an outside chance of winning this division, so I’m going to stay away.

Northeast Division

Boston Bruins +120
Buffalo Sabres +170
Montreal Canadiens +525
Toronto Maple Leafs +1000
Ottawa Senators +1000

I’m also staying away here.  The Bruins should win this division, but the Sabres did improve their team and have a shot at the title.  These are the only two teams with a legitimate shot, but I factored in the 8 months it would take to get a return, even if I wagered on both the Bruins and Sabres and decided against placing any wagers in the Northeast.

Southeast Division

Washington Capitals -225
Tampa Bay Lightning +225
Carolina Hurricanes +1350
Winnipeg Jets +2500
Florida Panthers +5000

Bet on the Washington Capitals @ -225!  The Capitals will once again win this division and will once again be the number 1 seed in the Eastern Conference coming out of the season.  The Caps are too good and they will be out for blood again this season after losing the Lightning.  Even with -225 odds I’m taking the Capitals here.

Central Division

Detroit Red Wings -120
Chicago Blackhawks +280
Nashville Predators +325
St. Louis Blues +1700
Columbus Blue Jackets +2500

Bet on the Chicago Blackhawks @ +280!  The Blackhawks will not come out with a Stanley Cup hangover this season.  In fact they will be hungrier than ever.  The core of the team is still together and you saw how close they came to beating the Canucks in the playoffs last year.  When this team wants to play they are the best in the league and this year they will come out to play.  I actually think the only team that has the potential to finish atop them this year is the St. Louis Blues and at +1700 that is pretty good value as well, but I’m sticking with the Blackhawks.

Northwest Division

Vancouver Canucks -800
Calgary Flames +700
Colorado Avalanche +2500
Edmonton Oilers +2500
Minnesota Wild +2500

The Canucks are the best regular season team in the Western Conference and you could easily argue that the other 4 teams in their division are the worst 4 teams in the West.  The Canucks will win this division.  The only question is how much money do you want to lock up for 7-8 months at such a small return.  I passed on this, but it’s a smart bet if you have bankroll to spare.

Pacific Division

Los Angeles Kings +150
San Jose Sharks +175
Anaheim Ducks +600
Phoenix Coyotes +750
Dallas Stars +825

Bet on the San Jose Sharks @ +175!  The Sharks will win this division once again.  I can’t understand why they have a higher payout than the Kings.  Mike Richards is overrated and the Kings haven’t proven themselves yet.  Havlat and Burns were brought in to help the Sharks once they make the playoffs, but that’s not to say they won’t also improve their chances in the regular season.  I’m amazed at the value this bet provides.

The odds do change so visit 5Dimes.com to get up to date odds.  Get your bets in now, the Blackhawks and Sharks lines are absolute steals!

NHL Betting Tips 2010/11 Predictions Complete

The Boston Bruins winning game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals wrapped up a strong season for us here at NHL Betting Tips.  We successfully called the Bruins to win game 6, game 7 and the entire series prior to game number 1, so these victories concluded a strong season and playoffs for us in the NHL.   We didn’t do quite as well in the prop bets on game 7, but they are always fun to place and we did hit about half of them.  I was especially surprised that Thomas didn’t get the Stanley Cup handed to him right away, but I guess after he just won the Conn Smythe he doesn’t need to hold a trophy twice out of three players.  Might not have thought that one through.

Anyways, this is just a quick wrap up post to say that there will not be many updates over the summer.  Possibly a few team predictions and 11-12 Stanley Cup Finals predictions come training camp, but until then this blog will be fairly dead with not much going on in the world of NHL betting over the summer.

In the meantime you can check out another one of our sites to learn how to bet on MLB baseball if that interests you at all.  With the NHL, NBA and NFL all taking a break for the summer, the MLB is really the main sports option over the summer months.

Until next year good luck with your wagers on other sports!
